Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized to fellow Baltic Ministers at a recent council that promotion of innovation, a knowledge based economy an a single digital market is an opportunity for closer cooperation among the Baltic countries. IT news regarding digital security threats is creating roadblocks to the development of the digital market that is a major priority for the European Union.
The development of the digital market largely depends on users' trust in the digital environment to undertake cross-border transactions. To this end, Dombrovskis stressed the need to develop methods for better detection of cybercrimes, and stronger deterrents to identity theft, spam, and copyright infringement. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation with Lithuania in the leading cross-border program "Innovation, Cluster and SME Networks of the Baltic Sea Region", which is implemented within the framework of the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
